The Power of Our Peers

Two Peer Support groups meet at Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church, NAMI and PFLAG. What is Peer Support, and why is it so important in our lives and ministry? Let’s look together at this important practice, and learn how we can all provide lateral support to our peers in difficult times.

6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Pearland Jr. High School Choir Performance
Get ready to witness a magical moment as the Pearland Jr. High School West Choir records a demo for the Texas Music Educators Association! Join us at 6:00pm on Friday, April 26th in the church Sanctuary. This demo could be their ticket to becoming a Texas Honor Choir! The event is open to the public, and the performance will be a short but sweet 15 minutes. Due to the recording process, no one will be admitted into the sanctuary after 5:50pm. Remember, no latecomers allowed, so be there by 5:50pm sharp to catch all the action!

Building Beloved Community Beyond the Binary is our first collaborative, multi-site, justice-making event happening throughout the Southern Region. Join us for a day of creating community with transgender, nonbinary folx, and our allies. This conference is an opportunity for LGBTQIA+ folks in our local communities to gather, laugh, create joy, and find partnerships in our local communities which will be a sustaining force throughout the upcoming year AND for folks not in the LGBTQIA+ community to learn effective, appropriate allyship through a Unitarian Universalist lens. PFLAG is the pioneering organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. Join us in keeping families united in loving bonds, fostering understanding, and embracing their gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning family members.

The next Exploring Diversity Book Group Discussion will be April 29 at 1:30pm via zoom. We will discuss Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares by Aarti Shahani. This memoir follows the lives of Aarti, a precocious scholarship kid, and her dad, a New York shopkeeper who mistakenly sells watches and calculators to the Cali drug cartel. The book is a coming-of-age story and a love letter from an outspoken modern daughter to her soft-spoken Old-World father. It is also about an Indian immigrant family’s American Dream, the justice system that took it away, and the daughter who fought to get it back. Join us!
