Sunday Service - Cultivating Our Dreams - Rev. Katie McQuage-Loukas
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Sunday Service - Cultivating Our Dreams - Rev. Katie McQuage-Loukas BAUUC Sanctuary Unitarian Universalists are Congregationalists – there is no outside authority to define our goals or dreams. But there is also no outside support to give us foundational resources! Our congregations are self-sustaining and self-directed. It’s all us, from top to bottom. We are in the middle of discerning what the work of this community is, bringing all our dreams to the table to share with one another. We must also discern our tools and resources – when we find the place where our resources align with our dreams, we will find our callings.

Great Decisions
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Great Decisions Cockrell Hall The BAUUC Speaker and Events Team is busy putting together the 2024 Great Decisions study-discussion program. In past years we have brought in a keynote speaker and speakers on some of the topics covered in Great Decisions. Because of the Pandemic, participant turnout for the guest speakers has not been good over the past several years. Because of this we are considering not bringing in speakers on Monday nights this year.
Be mindful that every discussion session is preceded by a presentation prepared by New York’s Foreign Policy Association. These are very thorough and usually cover everything a guest speaker would cover.
This year our discussion groups begin Thursday, February 8 at 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The discussions run for eight weeks.
Registration and booklet distribution will be held on Thursday, February 1 at 10:00am, 2:00 pm, and 7:00 pm at Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church located at 17503 El Camino Real in the Cockrell Fellowship Hall.
Please respond to [email protected] let us know if you will participate this year and indicate which session you would like to join. (10:00am, 2:00pm or 7:00pm)
The fee for Great Decisions is $40.00 per participant or $60.00 per couple if sharing a booklet. Recurs weekly

11:00 am – 12:00 pm Sunday Service - All Church Service - The Wonder of This World - Rev. Katie McQuage-Loukas BAUUC Sanctuary We know the Unitarian Universalist humanists of the past century, the Transcendentalists of the century before that, and the Romantics that inspired them. All contributed to a profound love for this earth that is our home. Every tradition needs a mythic layer, the big story that tells us who we are and where we come from. Ours is the grandeur and beauty of the universe and life itself.

Sunday Service - Emotional Intelligence - Alok Kalia, MD
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Sunday Service - Emotional Intelligence - Alok Kalia, MD BAUUC Sanctuary The Intelligence Quotient (IQ), which is a measure of the ability to make rational decisions, has proven to be a weak predictor of professional success. IQ tests ignore the role of emotions in the decision-making process. The term “Emotional Intelligence” refers to the ability to skillfully manage one’s own emotions and respond to the emotions of others with empathy. This ability is now felt to play a major role in personal and professional fulfillment.
Dr. Kalia will take you backstage, inside the brain, to show how the rational and emotional influences balance each other, and how they can sometimes become fierce competitors. He will also share techniques for gracefully responding to overwhelming emotions.
Alok Kalia, MD is a speaker on health issues for business executives. He is a retired professor from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a long-time member of the Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church.

Diversity Book Group
1:30 pm – 2:30 pm Diversity Book Group via Zoom The next Exploring Diversity Book Group Discussion will be March 25th at 1:30pm. We will discuss The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II.During World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee was a secret city, home to 75,000 residents – many of them young women from small towns across the South, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories until the end of the war–when Oak Ridge’s secret was revealed. The author, Denise Kiernan, interviewed the women who lived it–who are now in their 80s and 90s — and has rescued a remarkable chapter of American history from obscurity.
Join us! We read books with personal stories from diverse groups in the U.S. – including memoirs, biographies and historical accounts or fiction. There’s nothing more engaging than a good personal story!
