Our Shared Values

Our shared values

Love at the center

Unitarian Universalism is a religion without a creed. Instead of a required set of beliefs, we covenant around six shared values, held together by love — language adopted democratically by congregations across the country at the 2024 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

“Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values.”

Article II, UUA Bylaws

Six values

What we hold sacred

Interdependence

We honor the interdependent web of all existence and acknowledge our place in it.

Pluralism

We are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and theology.

Justice

We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all feel welcome and can thrive.

Transformation

We adapt to the changing world, collectively transforming and growing spiritually and ethically.

Generosity

We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope, freely sharing our faith, presence, and resources.

Equity

We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion.

A living tradition

Never complete, never perfect

These values grew out of the Seven Principles and Six Sources that guided Unitarian Universalism for four decades, renewed through a multi-year process of discernment, discussion, writing, and revision. Openness to change is fundamental to our Unitarian and Universalist heritages — come see how we live these values out on a Sunday morning.
