Ancient Wisdom for Today: Stoicism & UU

Nearly 1900 years ago, the most powerful person in Western society wrote a collection of Meditations. Did Marcus Aurelius and other Stoic philosophers leave us lessons that we can use as guides for living effective and virtuous lives? In this sermon, our Guest Minister, Rev. Dan King, returns to BAUUC to share recent reflections on stoicism and how central elements of that philosophy may be implicit in our modern understanding of our own eclectic faith tradition.

After an earlier career in law and management and over 25 years in UU lay and ordained ministry, on his retirement Rev. Dan King was named Emeritus minister of both the First UU Church in Houston and the independent Thoreau UU Congregation of Ft. Bend County. Over the past four years, Dan has provided occasional sermons to several Houston-area UU congregations. Dan and Nina (an artist and his life partner of almost 50 years) relocated to this area (just a month before Hurricane Harvey) in 2017 to be actively involved with their two young granddaughters, who are growing up way too fast!
