One Day at at Time

Many traditions counsel us to ‘Be Here Now’ and to ‘Live in the Present.’  Does this mean that we shouldn’t plan for the future, or study our pasts?  Desmond Tutu once wisely said that “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” I take him to mean that everything in life that seems daunting, overwhelming, and even impossible can be accomplished gradually by taking on just a little at a time. We can do that while still living within time – the past, the present and the future.
