May 2022 Ministerial Update

Dear Beloved Community,
As we wind down this church year, I am filled with gratitude for the time we’ve shared with one another. It has been a true joy to get to know this community over the past 9 months. Now, midway through my time with you, I see a congregation brimming with possibilities, with the drive and faith to truly “change lives and heal our world.”
This May, we came together to raise money for the Houston Voting Justice Coordinator that we will be hiring along with First UU and Emerson. The event was a great success thanks to the culinary skills of Butch Cockrell, Tom Zimmerman, George Becker, and Ken Gramann, and the musical stylings of JUst Us and The Staff Sisters. I hope to plan more events like this one next year. If you have ideas for future events, I’d love to hear them!
At our most recent congregational meeting, our new board and search committee were elected! The new board members are Bill Ellis, Leslie Murphey, Jackie Grupa, Jim Elder, Mike Hibbetts, and returning board members Barbara Brandon, Raj Kalia and Cheryl Keenan. The search committee is Terry Grim, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Tom Price, Leesa Serpas, Mark Sheehan, Joseph Stromberg, and Claire Zimmerman. I’m looking forward to working with incoming President Barbara Brandon to build on the good work we’ve started this year, and prepare the congregation for the inspiring challenge of finding a new settled minister next year.
We bade farewell to longtime Choir Director Beth Jordan this month as well, as she retired to have more freedom to travel with her husband, Steve. Happy trails, Beth and Steve!
Finally, please join me in welcoming our new Acting DLRE Gloria Miller. Gloria will be leading service on Sunday June 5th. I hope you are able to make it to get her off on the right foot! I’m excited for the gifts Gloria brings with her, and can’t wait to see her in action.
In faith,
your Transitional Minister, J Sylvan
