Our BAUUC Community Garden Crew will host their third annual “Garden Potluck Feast” on Saturday August 18 from 11:00am to 1:30pm in the Cockrell Fellowship Hall. Neighboring community gardeners are invited and there should be lots of good food and interesting door prizes, including homemade salsa made from tomatoes grown in our own BAUUC garden. Following our meal, we will welcome guest speaker Nancy Saint, President of the Native Plant Society of Texas, Clear Lake Chapter, who will talk about landscaping with native plants. Everyone is invited to come and join us on August 18.
Our Community gardens have been very productive with the help of abundant rains this summer. Bruce Meltzer’s beds have yielded lots of tomatoes, (see photo), as have Siok Hong Chen-Sabot, Vera Tosti, George Becker, Susan and Robert Strahan, and David and Jane Malin’s. Thanks to Volunteer Cindy Lewis who helps water the plots, pick vegetables and deliver them to the Interfaith Caring Ministries Food Bank. So far this year, we have donated a total of 75 lbs. of produce. In addition to cherry and heirloom tomatoes, yard long beans, collards, beets, mint, basil, zinnias, sunflowers and okra, we are also growing watermelons and cantaloupe in our donation beds. Many of these came from seeds and plants provided by Urban Harvest, the Community Garden Association to which we belong.
We always welcome volunteers to help with weeding, watering and harvesting. Just show up on the third Saturday of the month. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated and you’ll go home with some vegetables. For more information on what’s happening in our BAUUC Community Garden, visit https://bauucgarden.org/

Our Women’s Spirituality Group offers women the opportunity to connect with others and explore their spirituality. The group is currently reading and discussing the book “Our Souls at Night” by Kent Haruf. The next meeting will be on Thursday August 23 at 10:00am in room 131. Come and enjoy this community of women as we share our lives and strengthen our spirits. For more information, please contact Julie Blanford at firstname.lastname@example.org or 713-305-4313.
Our next book is ‘Waking up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race’, by Debby Irving (2014). One “aha!” moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight for this teacher. She opens a window on how white Americans are socialized, by focusing on the mechanics of racism operating in just one life — her own. The book is available new or used or Kindle/Nook. We will discuss this book Thursday, August 23 from 1:30 to 3:00pm in the library. Judy Bergman will lead a lively discussion. We plan to celebrate a birthday that day too. What a perfect time for YOU to join – start reading.
