FINCA International is a non-profit corporation that uses market-based solutions like microfinance and social enterprise to alleviate poverty in countries around the world. BAUUC has been pleased to partner with FINCA and has raised funds for over 20 years to support their efforts to set up village banks that make small loans mainly to women to start or enhance businesses. Three years ago, Peter Bowman and his partner Mary Lou Darst accepted an invitation from FINCA to travel to Guatemala and visit village banks there. This spring Peter is organizing another trip and invites BAUUC members and friends to join him. The trip is scheduled for April 9-16 and will take us to visit village banks in the highlands of Ecuador.
After flying to Quito, we’ll have a high-altitude adjustment day before spending two days visiting FINCA clients in Quito and Ibarra. Next day we’ll start the tourism part of our trip by visiting a famous artisan market in Otavalo. The second tourism day, we’ll visit a scenic volcanic lake Cotacachi on way back to Quito from Ibarra. Finally, participants can enjoy a day trip to Mindo, where they may take an optional tarabita (hand-powered cable car) across the valley and then follow a cloud forest trail. Non-tarabita participants can shop in Mindo or stay in Quito. Cost of the trip is about $2000, which includes staying in great or good hotels in Quito and Ibarra. Interested parties should contact Peter at firstname.lastname@example.org or 281-772-7204 as soon as possible to get an application to participate.
