Our Unitarian Universalist principles call for us to actively resist injustice and work to promote the worth and dignity of every person. This month, people across our nation will be gathering to make a powerful statement about women’s equality and the need for active engagement in the democratic process. Plan now to join BAUUC members as we come together with other Unitarian Universalists from all over our city to participate together in the 2018 Houston Women’s March on Saturday January 20. This event will be taking place in conjunction with the National Women’s March the same day in Las Vegas. The March theme is “Power to the Polls” with the goal of mobilizing women and allies in Houston and all over the State of Texas to wise up, rise up, engage, and VOTE. The March here in Houston will begin at 10:00am at the Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park (105 Sabine Street) and will end with a huge rally at City Hall. We will meet in the BAUUC parking lot at 8:15am to carpool together to the March. Signs are encouraged but cannot contain sticks/poles. Bring comfortable shoes and water and be sure to wear your gold UU t-shirt!
Our Women’s Spirituality Group offers women the opportunity to connect with others and explore their spirituality. The next meetings will be on Thursdays March 8 and March 22 at 10:00am in room 131. Come and enjoy this community of women as we share our lives and strengthen our spirits. For more information, please contact Julie Blanford at firstname.lastname@example.org
Curious about the people and the movements which have shaped Unitarian Universalism? On Wednesday nights March 14, 21 and 28, our Student Minister, Raphael Mills-Warner, will lead a three-part discussion class asking how our history can lead us into better living in the present. The session on March 14 will focus on about the different ways our Unitarian Universalist tradition has interacted with other peoples around the world and the session on March 21 will explore both our eagerness and reluctance to embrace diversity throughout UU history. The final session on March 28 will offer a chance to discover the ways that Unitarians, Universalists, and Unitarian Universalists have helped our movement grow. The class will meet each Wednesday night starting at 7:00pm in the church library.
Each year, BAUUC members join our friends from the Clear Lake Islamic Center and hundreds of others to take part in the Armand Bayou Trash Bash. This year’s Trash Bash will take place on Saturday March 24 from 8:30am to 1:00pm. We’ll be collecting trash and cleaning up Bay Area Park and the natural areas around the Armand Bayou Nature Preserve. For more information, please contact Jeff Boxell at email@example.com.
After the recent mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, students of the school have called for a nationwide day of protest to advocate for strengthening of gun laws. A “March for Our Lives” is being organized here in Houston by local students, parents and teachers hoping to give a voice to those seeking change. The Houston March will take place on Saturday March 24 at 9:00am at Tranquility Park (404 Rusk Street) with a rally at Houston City Hall. Our BAUUC Service and Justice Ministry Team invites you to join them in going and marching in this important public witness event. We’ll meet in the church parking lot at 7:00am and carpool together.
As part of our commitment to support LGBT people in our community, BAUUC hosts the monthly gatherings of the Clear Lake meeting of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). The group works to keep families together in loving relationships, helping them understand and affirm their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender family members. PFLAG meetings are on the fourth Sunday of each month at 2:00pm in Cockrell Hall. The next meeting will be on Sunday March 25. For more information, please call the Houston area PFLAG helpline at 713-467-3524.
